The exam room was quiet when the Afghanistan combat veteran finally raised his hand and asked the question that he had mulled over for weeks.
He had served in special operations.
He had deployed to combat.
He returned home carrying the weight of chronic pain, opioid dependence, and PTSD; conditions that, taken together, shattered his world such that the idea of his previous life seemed distant, if not foreign.
He had only heard about medical cannabis.
He was skeptical, but he was also out of options.
Unlike his usual self, he had brought a friend with him for support.
He used to always be the one to lend support.
So, he turned to his physician and asked:
“I’m at the end of my rope. I want to use medical marijuana. Can you tell me what to use and where to get it?”
The doctor’s answer was measured, honest, and to his friend, astounding.
“It probably won’t kill you,” the physician said. “But I live in the world of FDA-approved drugs. And that doesn’t exist for medical marijuana.”
The friend in that room was another combat veteran, George Hodgin.

And from that moment forward, the founder of what would become BRC Therapeutics.

To understand why George Hodgin founded a company to navigate one of the most complex regulatory environments in the pharmaceutical industry, it helps to better understand who this man is.
He grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a Morehead-Cain Scholarship, one of the oldest and most prestigious merit scholarships in the United States, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.
On September 11th, 2001, he watched the world change.
While most of us were in shock, George decided to answer his call to duty.
Hodgin became a Navy SEAL officer, deploying to combat in Afghanistan and other countries around the world.

The United States is facing a chronic pain crisis.
Tens of millions of Americans suffer from conditions for which existing treatments offer only partial relief, carry serious risks, or both.
The opioid epidemic is, in many ways, the consequence of a medical system that tried to solve a complex biological problem with a blunt solution.

Advancing botanical cannabinoid therapeutics through the full FDA drug approval process is both time-consuming and resource intensive.

The scientific foundation of BRC Therapeutics rests on a concept that is straightforward in theory but has proven elusive in practice: multimodality.
Many of the most intractable conditions in medicine like chronic pain, neurological disorders and inflammatory conditions, are multi-mechanistic.

This complexity is precisely what single-target drugs have failed to adequately address.

BRC’s proprietary drug candidates are defined combinations of botanically derived cannabinoids, formulated at specific ratios to maximize efficacy and minimize adverse effects.
They are not products sold to consumers.
They are investigational therapies engineered to pharmaceutical standards and manufactured in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and Good Agricultural and Collection Practices (GACP), with the goal of advancing toward regulatory approval.
“Traditional therapeutics often target a single receptor or pathway, frequently leaving gaps in treatment,” the company states. “BRC’s therapies are designed to address multiple mechanisms both within and beyond the nervous system, potentially offering a more comprehensive approach to care.”
Several of BRC Therapeutics’ investigational drug candidates are currently being evaluated in clinical trials, targeting conditions where patients have long been underserved by existing medicine.
BRC’s pipeline extends into neurological and movement disorders, areas where the company’s multimodal approach may offer advantages given the complexity of the underlying disease biology.
Creating commercially viable drugs within an underappreciated modality is not a new concept.
The history of modern medicine is filled with breakthroughs that once began as overlooked or misunderstood compounds or were championed by scientists long before the pharmaceutical industry caught up—psychedelics, monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, RNA, and live biotherapeutics just to name a few.
BRC’s view is that by applying the same standard and discipline expected of any drug development program, cannabinoid therapeutics can follow a similar trajectory, and position BRC to further define and spearhead the field.
GW Pharmaceuticals proved the concept. In 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex® (cannabidiol), a plant-derived, highly purified single active molecule formulation for the treatment of rare pediatric epilepsies.
In doing so, the company established that a cannabis-derived drug could earn full FDA approval and garner commercial success.
GW Pharma was subsequently acquired by Jazz Pharmaceuticals for approximately $7.2 billion. Annual revenues from Epidiolex exceed $1 billion.
BRC Therapeutics is not seeking to replicate GW.
It is building what comes next: a broader approach, a deeper pipeline, and a scalable model for how botanically derived cannabinoid therapeutics can systematically address underserved conditions where multi-mechanistic diseases have outpaced the capabilities of existing treatments.
A phrase on the BRC website captures what their work is about: Live. Every. Day.
It reflects a focus not just on symptom management, but on restoring consistency and function to patients’ lives.

Hodgin is careful to draw a sharp line between what BRC is doing and what has come before in the broader cannabis space.

“The medical community didn’t have the answers we were looking for,” Hodgin says of those early experiences.
“There was simply no effective treatment available at the time that had been held to those standards and could reliably be used to treat the indications my friend was seeking relief for. We’re well on our way to change that.”
